Design Technology - D.T.
Statement of Curriculum Intent
At BCF it is our intent to deliver a Design and Technology curriculum which ignites a passion for creating “something for someone for some purpose” (Design and Technology Association). We intend to develop children’s ability to create high quality products through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding. We intend to develop a sense of enjoyment and pride in their ability to make and to nurture their creativity and innovation through designing and making. Through making, changing and modifying things for themselves, children come to a greater understanding of their world and develop a sense of agency – of being able to change and modify their environment.
Curriculum Implementation
Our Design and Technology is in line with the National Curriculum and is based on the ‘Kapow’ scheme of work. This is implemented through:
- A well thought out, whole school, yearly overview of the D&T curriculum which allows for progression of knowledge and skills across year groups. Projects are carefully selected to encompass the five main stages outlined in the National Curriculum for D&T (Design, Make, Evaluate, Technical Knowledge and Food and Nutrition).
- Well planned and resourced projects which give children a hands-on learning experience. In textiles, cooking and nutrition, structures, mechanical systems and electrical systems
- A range of skills being taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken.
- Ensuring that links are made in a cross-curricular way, giving children motivation and meaning for their learning.
Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies and are adapted to ensure that all pupils are engaged and that lessons appeal to those with a variety of learning needs and styles. Knowledge organisers are provided to build a foundation of factual knowledge and build vocabulary.
We acknowledge that strong subject knowledge is vital for staff to be able to deliver an effective and robust Design and Technology Curriculum which is why we have invested in the resource, Kapow as this provides quality CPD for staff to feel confident prior to delivering lessons.
Curriculum Impact
By providing our children with an excellent design and technology curriculum that provides a wide range of opportunities to develop their skills in design and technology, we hope that our children will have:
- Clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum.
- Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- Have a quality understanding of the principles of healthy eating, diets and recipes in preparation for adolescence and adulthood.
- Have an appreciation for key individuals, inventions and events in history and of today that impact our world.
- Self-evaluate and reflect on their learning at different stages and identify areas to improve.
- A firm foundation of knowledge and skills to see them equipped to take on further learning in secondary school.
